Thinking Small is sometimes the backdoor to Big Success

Someone rightly said, “The key to success is to focus your minds on things you can acquire not the things you fear”

So, what is a goal? As defined in the dictionary it is a dream with a finishing date. In this world of perfection reaching a midpoint would mean that we have reached the midpoint of our goal. But what if someone is consistently struggling to achieve goals. Would you say it is his bad luck? Or you would think his goals are too big to fulfill?

Come to think of it, none of these actually hold true. In reality, the greatest problem that has been stopping most people from accomplishing their goals is that they are not thinking small enough.

Yes, you heard it right.

PEOPLE ARE NOT THINKING SMALL ENOUGH

Setting Goals:  When it comes to achieving goals, there are no blue prints, gurus, and books that would give a person a definite assurance and make all the dreams come true like a magical intervention. But there are certain paths that one can follow which will show the way to the right destination.

The first thing one must do is to be sure what he or she wants. These are some pointers in that direction.

  • 1) Let your family and friends know about your dreams.
  • 2) Set a definite target.
  • 3) Segregate your goals into smaller more manageable ones.
  • 4) Follow the path of someone who has already accomplished a similar goal.
  • 5) Trust yourself that you can achieve your goals.
  • 6) Take some action each day that takes you closer to your goal.
  • 7) Repeated steps 5 and 6 above each day.

You have to continuously work on your beliefs and build them up like a muscle. Beliefs like muscles until worked on remain small, weak and without any real purpose.

Along with larger goals we need to convince ourselves to believe in what we want to achieve. All that matters is how much we BELEIVE not what we WANT or how much we PROCLAIM. Our actions are affected by what we believe in.

BIG GOALS + SMALL BELEIFS =

  • Usually we set big goals that we have been promising to ourselves for years.
  • We should keep reminding ourselves about our goals and keep the motivation to the highest level.
  • We should have a clear roadmap of what we need.
  • Once the roadmap is defined we should take small steps forward.
  • But under no circumstances should we miss our targets or spiral off from the target we have set.

Circumstances will seem to pop up without fail when we are out to achieve our defined goals. We will find ourselves competing in some situation or the other which will try to deviate us from our path to success. But we should stay focussed and push ourselves back on track again even if a certain situation pushes us off the path once in a while.

Now the point is how do we find the courage and strength to do all of this?

The key is “Thinking Small”. There is a certain power in thinking small and taking smaller steps before going on the journey to challenge the larger goal.

This article has proposed ways of finding small solutions to big problems. The traditional method of achieving goals works in most cases, but the limitations in belief sometimes hinder the achievement of the goal. To solve this problem it is suggested to substitute bigger goals with smaller ones but then these small goals should take you in the same direction as the bigger goals. For example, if the goal is to start a business then a smaller substitute for this goal can be to interview a successful business owner for inspiration.

We have all been brought up with the thought of Dream Big, Think Big. So, don’t get it wrong here when you are asked to Think Small. What we are trying to say is, dreaming big is great but there is no harm in getting things moving with smaller steps and getting your confidence up with a few wins.

The purpose of these smaller steps is to build up a belief and not to get closer to the goal itself. These steps are the precursors to the steps you have to take to get to the final goal. It’s like the 100m sprint runner taking his position to GET, SET and GO.

So whatever your goals and dreams are, put them aside for a little while. Go into the arena and get those crucial small wins for yourself, then take that impetus and go make it happen.
